Viola Davis on Crafting the Heart of 'The Help'

Viola Davis on Crafting the Heart of 'The Help' By Jamie Painter Young December 9, 2011 "The Help" Playing a maid was not part of Viola Davis' master plan when she graduated from Juilliard: "I had dreams of playing Hedda Gabler or Nora in 'A Doll's House' or Lady Macbeth," she says. "I had an idea of the characters I wanted to play. And certainly nowhere on the list was a maid."Davis, however, made an exception after reading Kathryn Stockett's bestselling debut novel, "The Help," which Stockett's good friend Tate Taylor had signed on to write and direct. Taylor cast Davis as Aibileen Clark, a domestic servant working for a white family in Jackson, Miss. Aibileen is the heart and soul of the book and the film, and thanks to Davis' powerhouse performance, Aibileen rises above her given station in life to contribute her part to the rising civil rights movement during the 1960s. "It was a revelation to me," recalls Davis of the book. "It kind of surprised me in the most beautiful way, and for me, that's usually not been my experience when I read stories, whether they're written by white or black writers. I usually find the black characters are not humanized. You don't recognize them. You just feel like they're just functions or archetypes. But this is one case where she really put pen to paper and said, 'I really, really want to explore who these women were.' "On finishing the novel she said to herself, "This has got to be a movie, and I've got to option it. I've got to play Aibileen. Then I found out Tate Taylor had it." As fate would have it, Taylor had Davis in mind for the role, and they had mutual friends. While Davis was starring on Broadway in "Fences" with Denzel Washington, she and Taylor met, and she was formally offered the role. Still, Davis says, she had trepidation about playing Aibileen. Davis was well-aware that some in the black community were not fans of the bookbecause it was written by a white writer and it depicted black maids in the 1960s. Says Davis, "I think a lot of that criticism is coming from the perspective of people just wanting to see different stories. I can understand that. But I think that so much of it is rooted in pain from the past. I think we, as African-Americans, have a tendency to hold on to the part of history where we were wounded. And I think that there are certain images that open up those wounds. Certainly the maidthe subservient or so-called subservient maid, with an uneducated dialect and physically unattractivecertainly opens up those wounds. So I think that's where it stems from."But I think you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater," she continues. "And I think if you just see these womenAibileen, Minny, Constantine, Yule Maeas subservient maids, I think you've missed the whole point of the story. These characters are very humanized and very brave. And they absolutely represent a part of our history that is realthat is, a lot of our mothers and grandmothers were maids. They did not step into the pages of history books, and yet they played a valuable role in our lives. They laid the groundwork. And I believe those people deserve a voice just as much as Martin Luther King and Medgar Evers and Fannie Lou Hamer."Tapping the Spirit To prepare for her role, Davis poured herself into research about that chapter in history. She especially watched documentaries, noting the film "Eyes on the Prize" as one in particular. "It's like a teacher once told me: You can never have too much information about a character. Also, I started with what I feel as an actor is the bible, which is the text itself, which is the book and script [of "The Help"]. And then after that, I always feel like I need a person to focus. So I always have a vision of a person in my head, and that person was my mother and my grandmother, who when they walk into a room nobody would ever notice themjust in the most beautiful way, ordinary. I felt like I had to start with that. I had their experiences in my head, stories my mother had told me about my grandmother being a maid and herself being a maid. And everything else I just had to make up, use my imagination in terms of filling her out."Davis shares that the most challenging aspect of playing Aibileen was "tapping into the spirit of a mother who had lost a childwho had preceded her in death, because I felt like that was her driving need." The most challenging scene for Davis was Aibileen being fired by her employer, Elizabeth Leefolt (played by Ahna O'Reilly), and having to say goodbye to Mae Mobley, the little girl she has raised and loved as her own. "Even reading the book, it was very challenging for me to read that part. That story really touched me the most," says Davis, who explains that the shooting of this long, heartbreaking scene was also difficult, as it was broken up and captured on two different days, the interior shots being filmed on one day, the exterior (depicting Aibileen walking away from the house) on another. Davis also had the challenge of trying to help a 3-year-old actor (twins Eleanor and Emma Henry) through the scene. "The constant kind of stepping out of my body to be a facilitator for her to just hit her mark and to say her lines and to look at me, and then stepping back into myself to play Aibileen, was very difficult."What was not difficult was working with the mostly female cast that included Emma Stone, Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Sissy Spacek. "It was one of those dream situations," says Davis. "Usually [other actors] don't want to encourage you to do your best work, because they feel it is a reflection of what they're not doing or their failure. My excellence was their excellence. It's my same experience working with Meryl Streep. She felt like her giving 150 percent during my close-up was just as important as her giving 150 percent during her close-up. Those are the kind of people you want to be creating withtotal lack of ego."After skyrocketing from relative anonymity to celebrity as a result of her 2009 Oscar nomination for her small but powerful role opposite Streep in "Doubt," Davis has felt a responsibility as an artist to inspire young actors, especially female African-American actors. "I mean, there really is a deficit," says Davis, referring to role models. "I'm really starting to get hip to the fact that it is an incredible responsibility once the baton has been passed to you." Whether producing her own projects in the future, mentoring younger generations of actors, or continuing to grow as an artist, Davis plans to not let her fame go to waste. "The best thing I can do with any kind of power I have is to create more work and to encourage."Outtakes Other films include "Eat Pray Love," "Knight and Day," and "State of Play"Won Tony Awards for her work in "King Hedley II" and "Fences," both by August Wilson; earned a Tony nomination for her Broadway debut in Wilson's "Seven Guitars"Appears in this month's "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and the upcoming "Learning to Fly"After shooting "The Help," Davis adopted her first child, a girl, now 16 months old. On how motherhood might have affected her performance in "The Help": "Absolutely it would have been different for me if I were to play Aibileen now. It would have settled into a different place in my spirit, probably even a deeper place, because now I don't have to use my imagination." Buble album merry in weak week

Sales of Michael Buble's "Christmas" stayed merry and bright last week, and the singer's yule album held onto the No. 1 post on the U.S. album chart for a second consecutive week. Crooner's Warner Bros. album saw a 29% bump and maintained its position with a 293,000-unit frame, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures for the week ended Dec. 4. Performance of Buble's set, one of only three gainers in the national top 10, is one of the few positives in a sluggish holiday week that saw just three albums selling more than 100,000 units. Adele's "21" (Columbia), stoked anew by the Brit singer's six Grammy noms last week, rose five slots and reappeared in the top five at No. 2, shifting 144,000 and gaining 2%. Justin Bieber's Christmas collection "Under the Mistletoe" (Island) rose to No. 3, selling 133,000 (off 11%). Top five is completed by Drake's "Take Care" (No. 4, 90,000 sold, off 49%) and Nickelback's "Here and Now" (No. 5, 78,000, down 66%). The remainder of the top 10: Mary J. Blige's "My Life IIThe Journey Continues, Act I" (No. 6, 72,000 sold, down 54%), Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" (No. 7, 68,000, off 66%), Andrea Bocelli's "Concerto" (No. 8, 61,000, down 6%), "Now 40" (No. 9, 48,000, down 27%) and Lady Antebellum's "Own the Night" (No. 10, 48,000, up 3%). Chart should see some much-needed improvement next week with the arrival of the posthumous Amy Winehouse Collection "Lioness" and new albums by T-Pain and the Black Keys. Whoever else consider the critique from the piece? Why you think Lola and Kymia could escape? Matson: I used to be surprised, while not shocked. So… somehow, no one ends up having sex.” Hmm. May I suggest Shame? [The Awl]

The Take

Tom Hardy and Shaun Evans in "The Take" Filmed in Ireland by Company Pictures & Warner Sisters for Sky1 and Sky1 HD, and distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment. Executive producers, Lavinia Warner, Charles Pattinson, George Faber, Helen Flint, Suzan Harrison, Andrew Lowe, Elaine Pyke, Martina Cole; producer, Willow Grylls; director, David Drury; writer, Neil Biswas; based on the book by Martina Cole.Freddie Jackson - Tom Hardy Jimmy - Shaun Evans Maggie - Charlotte Riley Jackie - Kierston Wareing Ozzy - Brian CoxA small-scale 2009 British crime drama picked up as original programming for Encore, "The Take" offers the simple pleasure of Tom Hardy at his brutish, glowering best. Released from prison in the opening moments, his thuggish Freddie Jackson is so feral and simian as to recall Paul Muni in the original "Scarface," setting up an awkward and eventually adversarial relationship with his more cerebral cousin, also well played by Shaun Evans. "The Take" is mob light, perhaps, but still unfolds in a manner that deftly pulls you through each of its four hourlong chapters. Hardy's Freddie is hardly a deep thinker. Instead, he's prone to settling disputes with a broken bottle and asking questions later. Cousin Jimmy (Evans) -- who becomes his unlikely sidekick -- hardly seems to be his match. Not only does he rely on his wits, but he even has a lovely girlfriend, Maggie (Charlotte Riley), who humanizes him -- and doesn't trust Freddie. Yet with mob boss Ozzy (the always-splendid Brian Cox) behind bars, the two are left to manage his dirty dealings, despite the growing tension between them. And without giving too much away, alliances shift in unpredictable ways over a period covering 10 years. Beginning in the mid-1980s, the story, by Neil Biswas (adapted from Martina Cole's novel) and directed by David Drury incorporates enough violence and tragedy to sustain a strong sense of menace -- at least, until the final hour, where the payoff doesn't quite equal the buildup. Most of the drama naturally stems from the mercurial Freddie, a character Hardy -- whose resume includes a terrific "Wuthering Heights" remake, before entering director Christopher Nolan's orbit via "Inception" and the upcoming Batman sequel -- turns into a seething, volatile presence. He's the kind of functioning psychopath who can go off at a moment's notice, and makes what otherwise could be a rather tired crime drama eminently watchable and suspenseful. Although some of the cultural aspects of Britain in the go-go '80s might not resonate with a U.S. audience, for Encore, the acquisition nevertheless qualifies as a no-brainer -- offering pay-TV grit on the cheap. In the process, the takeaway from "The Take" again proves an old showbiz saw: Cast the right actor as a mobster, and being bad can be pretty damn good.Camera, Owen McPolin; production designer, Susie Cullen; editor, Chris Ridsdale; music, Ruth Barrett; casting, Emma Style. 4 HOURS. Keck's Exclusives: Castle Flashes Back to the '40s

Stana Katic I was recently invited by the Screen Actors Guild to moderate a panel with Castle beauty Stana Katic, who let slip that the ABC show is planning a film-noir episode. Exec producer Andrew Marlowe confirms a February sweeps installment will find Castle and Beckett imagining themselves in the 1940s, with Nathan Fillion suited up as a Sam Spade-type PI and Stana as a gangster's moll. Then in the spring, Castle and Beckett will trip the light fantastic in a Dancing With the Stars-themed episode timed to that show's return. But don't look for Tom Bergeron to make a cameo. Says Andrew: "Unfortunately, we already killed Tom in 2010 [when he played] a talk-show host." Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

The Vodka Factory ((Vodkafabriken))

A Hysteria Films production in co-production with Arte GEIE, SVT, TVP 1, with the support of the Swedish Film Institute, the Polish Film Institute, in collaboration with YLE. (International sales: Arte France, Issy-les-Moulineaux, France.) Produced by Russo Merenda. Co-producers, Anne Baumann, Ulla Nilsson, Barbara Pawlowska. Directed, written by Jerzy Sladkowski. With: Valentina Barabina, Tatania Pronina, Danilo Barabin, Andrzej Fidyk.Truth proves more cinematic than fiction in vet documentarian Jerzy Sladkowski's "The Vodka Factory." The mesmerizing story of Valentina Barabina, a single mother fiercely setting her sights on stardom in Moscow to escape the dead-end Russian boondocks, plays like the best kind of narrative moviemaking; the presence of the camera and the filmmaker's outsider p.o.v. seem to heighten the awareness of all involved, imparting an edge of desperation, bitterness and fanatical hope to the proceedings. By turns moving, hilarious and horrific, this powerhouse docu could score in theatrical release. Barabina and her young son, Danilo, live in the Russian town of Zhiguljovsk with her long-suffering mother, Tatiana Pronina, who works as a bus conductor. Taking shameless advantage of her mom's fondness for the kid, tarted-up Barabina will unexpectedly show up and dump him on the bus for hours while she trips off to acting lessons or belly-dancing classes. Barabina plans on leaving her little boy in her mother's care while she chases her thespian dreams in the capital. But Pronina harbors dreams of her own, having received a love letter from a former flame she hasn't seen in 30 years. Sladkowski even captures their first surprise meeting on the bus, their bashful exchange of confidences punctuated by fare collections. For Pronina, rearing her grandson would mean renouncing her newborn hope for companionship. Mother and daughter have much in common, both having divorced drunken abusive men. Indeed, alcohol is apparently the fuel that keeps Zhiguljovsk running; in addition to giving the film a catchy title, it provides employment for most of the town's women, who bottle vodka by day and consume it by night. Barabina herself works in the factory, and Sladkowski shoots several scenes there as she interacts with female co-workers (men are largely conspicuous by their absence). The women gossip and offer unsolicited critiques of Barabina's acting chops, condemn her heartlessness in abandoning her son and predict her sordid downfall in the big city, the rhythm of their conversation counterpointing their practiced assembly-line moves. When the women congregate at night in one another's houses, rancor and despair flow as freely as the vodka, as they defiantly admit infidelity or express raw hatred for their offspring. In this context, Barabina's naive belief in her own talent registers as less delusional than desperate. Indeed, despite her plump, mascara-heavy appearance, there is something touching in her single-minded desire for transcendence. In her acting tutorial, she wrestles with a text, frustrating her teacher with a lack of imagination or empathy that makes her unable to rephrase written lines. Yet she has chosen a role that ironically mirrors her own; as she emotes for her tutor and for Sladkowski's camera, her struggle to connect with her self-centered emotions creates its own poignant authenticity. Weekend Receipts Special Edition: Muppets Co-Star Beaker Breaks Down the Holiday Box Office

As usual, America’s taste for leftovers dominated the long Thanksgiving weekend — but enough about Breaking Dawn - Part 1, which handily knocked off newcomer The Muppets for first place at the holiday box office. The specialty meals are what’s really worth sampling, and to help break it all down, I’d like to welcome Muppets co-star and special guest box-office correspondent Beaker to provide his typically keen, clear-eyed insights. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 Gross: $42,000,000 ($221,300,000) Screens: 4,066 (PSA $10,330) Weeks: 2 (Change: -69.6%) So, Beaker, the first half of the Twilight finale narrowly avoided having the franchise’s steepest week-two drop, trailing New Moon’s plunge by a mere half-percentage point. Are you surprised it didn’t break 70 percent? Meemee meemeemee. Meemee, meemeemeemeemee meemeemee. But even with such an idle, expansive Thanksgiving weekend, viewers had a lot of movies to choose from. Shouldn’t it have been more competitive? Meemeemee, meemee. Meemeemeemee! Meememeemee meemee, meemeemee. Meemee? That’s a great question. Ultimately, though, I think Bill Condon can hold his head high. Higher than after he co-produced the Oscars, anyway. Meemeemee. Meemee meemeemee, meemeemee — meemeemee meemee. 2. The Muppets Gross: $29,500,000 ($42,000,000) Screens: 3,440 (PSA $8,576) Weeks: 1 Let’s face it, Beaker: $42 million for The Muppets in five days may seem slightly soft, but for a revived ’70s property essentially remade for people in their 30s and 40s, that’s not so bad. Meemeemee. Meemee? Meemeemeemeemee. Meemee. Meemeemeemeemee, meemeemee — meemeemee. Meemeemeemee, meemee. So you’re disappointed? Meemeemeemee! Meemeemee. Maybe you guys laid the viral marketing and spoof trailers on a little too thick. Perhaps The Muppets was just overexposed? Meemeemee! Meemeemeemee, meemee meemee meemee — meemee. OK, fine. So maybe not “you guys,” but Disney, rather. Meemeemee. Would you have done anything differently? Like perhaps play up the ensemble — less Jason Segel and Amy Adams, more Kermit and Miss Piggy and— Meemeemeemee. Meemee! Of course — and more Beaker. Mee. Do you’ll think we’ll get a sequel? Meemeemeemee. Meemee, meemee, meemee. Meemeemeemee. Maybe you can do an action film in the meantime — kind of a Taylor Lautner/Abduction thing to try a bolster your leading-man cred. Meemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemee! Well, you know what I mean. Meemeemee. Meemee! 3. Happy Feet Two Gross: $13,400,000 ($43,773,000) Screens: 3,606 (PSA $3,716) Weeks: 2 (Change: -36.9%) That’s not a bad week-two drop at all, is it? Meemeemee. Meemee, meemee meemeemeemee meemeemeemeemee? I understand, but it’s a holiday weekend. Even The Muppets is bound to have competition in the family market. Meemeemeemee, meemeemee. I think you mean, “Four-quandrant, shmour-quadrant.” Meemeemee. Meemeemeemee, meemeemee. 4. Arthur Christmas Gross: $12,700,000 ($17,000,000) Screens: 3,376 (PSA $3,762) Weeks: 1 See, this is what I’m talking about: It could have been worse for The Muppets. At least you didn’t bottom out like Arthur Christmas. Meemeemee, meemee meemee meemeemeemee. Meemeemee! Meemee meemeemeemee meemee meemeemee. I don’t think James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie and Bill Nighy are quite what I’d call “B-list limey voice tarts.” Meemeemee. Meemee? Well, at the very least because McAvoy is Scottish. Meemeemee, meemee, meemeemeemee. Meemee! Meemeemeemee! 5. Hugo Gross: $11,350,000 ($15,380,000) Screens: 1,277 (PSA $8,888) Weeks: 1 This is another one I couldn’t peg going into the weekend. Loved the film, couldn’t read the market. What do you think? Meemeemee, meemee, meemeemeemee. Meemeemee. Meemee? Meemeemee! The 3-D was a huge help, to be sure. And as I was alluding to a little bit ago, I think Paramount saw the writing on the wall in terms of family-film competition. Was 1,200 screens too conservative, too aggressive, or just right? Meemeemee. Meemeemeemee, meemee. Meemee. Meemeemeemee, meemee, meemee. Meemee! Meemeemee — meemeemee, meemee? Meemeemeemee, meemee. So how wide should they expand from here? It really seems like it could go either way. Meemee, meemeemee. Meemeemee meemeemeemeemee meemee. Fantastic. That’s why I love you, Beaker. Meemeemee. — 10. The Descendants Gross: $7,200,000 ($10,741,000) Screens: 433 (PSA $16,628) Weeks: 2 (Change: +505%) 12. My Week With Marilyn Gross: $1,773,000 ($2,085,000) Screens: 244 (PSA $7,266) Weeks: 1 23. The Artist Gross: $210,000 (new) Screens: 4 (PSA $52,500) Weeks: 1 So The Weinsteins heaped Marilyn and The Artist into one weekend — two Oscar hopefuls opposite Fox Searchlight’s own awards-horse The Descendants. I honestly don’t think that’s an experiment even you would have tried, and you’re always blowing things up. Meemeemee, meemeemeemee. Meemeemeemee. Meemee. Well, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. The bottom line is that the best theatrical average of the week belongs to a silent, black-and-white film made by a French guy. Can you believe it? Meemeemee. Meemee, meemeemeemee — meemee! Can we all agree that Marilyn opened too aggressively? Like, Michelle Williams wasn’t even really around to promote it that much — and it’s her freaking movie. Meemee! Meemeemee, meemeemeemee. Meemeemee. How much do you think The Artist can make at the end of the day? Meemeemee. Meemee? Meemee? Wow. What about The Descendants? Meemee. Meemee? Seriously? It’s rated R, it has only Clooney going for it name-wise… Meemeemee, meemee meemee, meemeemee. Yeah, but at least Black Swan had lesbians. Meemee. Meemeemeemee. I guess we shouldn’t leave out A Dangerous Method at $182,000 on four screens — a $45,500 per-screen average. Meemeemee. Meemee. Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Meemee. Thanks for joining me today, Beaker. And, er, oh my God you’re on fire! Meemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemee! [Figures via Box Office Mojo] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter. Woodsy Allen - A Documentary: TV Review

"Most surprises are negative." That's a bid from Woodsy Allen inside the positively evocative surprise this is the PBS American Masters series' Woodsy Allen: A Documentary, airing by 50 percent parts November. 20 and 21.our editor recommendsPBS' Woodsy Allen Documentary Spotlights His Influences and Effects on Martin Scorsese, Chris Rock (Exclusive Video)AFM 2011: Robert Weide's 'Woody Allen: A Documentary' Sells U.S. DVD, Digital Rights to New VideoWoody Allen Changes Title of Next Film Author and director Robert Weide got unfettered utilization of one of the country's great and several prolific company company directors whose private existence and feelings about his work was not adequately taken. Credit Weide, who spent yearly . 5 with Allen, including in your house, traveling and also on the audience of the functional film, due to not botching this kind of grand chance. Woodsy Allen handles to astutely chronicle not only a career in film but to shed some light round the guy behind the flicks, and using this method it pushes the too easily used "neurotic NY Jew" taken proper care of just like a catchall for Allen into areas both familiar and not. Whereas Allen stays many of the documentary deflecting credit and ultizing self-deprecating lines to melt the glare more self examination, you will discover plenty of moments when he seems at his most open and vulnerable. During minimal of moments -- getting away . from the vehicle, talking with stars on set -- a good deal might be learned in what the 75-year-old is similar to at this time around of his existence. PHOTOS: Woodsy Allen Turns 75 And frequently it's people small moments that stay with you -- Allen sitting to the side of his bed mattress, glancing within the random scraps of paper where he jots lower movie ideas after which it doesn't remember them and progresses, or acknowledging he really doesn't have everything to say, the bottom line is uncomfortable social situations, for the stars who be employed in his films. Or perhaps the delight he seems to consider falling missing genius as they got in the way making chaos from this (he's still critical of Manhattan and Hannah and Her Brothers and sisters, among other films, due to not turning out precisely how he'd have loved). "This really is really the Woodsy doc everybody remains waiting for, and i am delighted this creative giant is finally supposing his rightful devote the American Masters library," mentioned series creator and executive producer Susan Lacy. Weide begins the documentary with Allen essentially wondering what all the fuss is about and can make him think about a vehicle trip to his old neighborhood and open and walk around. And Weide taps in to a simple truism this is a hallmark of Allen's career: He's constantly writing and creating and contains never stopped thinking about doing just that nearly any day's his existence. Weide then starts in the beginning, with Allen writing jokes just like a teen and delivering them into newspaper columnists. That begat writing jokes for publicists to provide for their clients, then writing for Sid Caesar, to his earliest, toughest behave as a stand-up comic (where his natural shyness is simply overcome by his refusal to avoid doing what he loves). Weide tracks Allen's early career through television (with indispensable comments from Dick Cavett and Allen's sister, Letty Aronson) to simply accept Money and Run, the guidance of Charles Joffe and Jack Rollins, as well as an amount then be considered a unique structure to create and financing films, roughly one yearly, with total autonomy for your relaxation of his existence. Woodsy Allen posseses an enormous volume of stars speaking regarding participation with Allen (including Diane Keaton, Tony Roberts, Dianne Wiest, Owen Wilson, Scarlett Johansson, Sean Penn, Mariel Hemingway and John Cusack). Aronson offers the most detail in what he was like becoming an adult, there's some hilariously revealing footage Allen shot of his mother, Nettie Konigsberg. Weide can get an ideal volume of professional balance by like the stars, co-authors like Mickey Rose (Proceed and take Money and Run, Bananas), Marshall Brickman (Sleeper, Annie Hall, Manhattan), film experts like Richard Schickel and F.X. Feeney, former assistants and cinematographers like Gordon Willis and Vilmos Zsigmond in addition to Martin Scorsese to opine on Allen. You will discover enough outdoors comments to flesh out what Allen adds and what he shades just a little along with his self-deprecation. PHOTOS: Costume Kinds of 'Midnight in Paris' And, yes, in the event you're wondering -- and everybody will probably be -- Weide addresses the Soon-Yi Previn situation, but despite Allen while others speaking about this, lots of people won't be thinking that Weide went far enough along with his questioning (he mentioned Allen never rejected to resolve an problem). Really, you'll be able to't profile someone like Allen in 3 1/2 roughly several hours and not expose you to ultimately second-taking a chance. Maybe some audiences will believe that despite unequalled access, Weide didn't shed as much light round the reclusive Allen while he may have. That's because, despite a couple of from the intimate discussions Allen partcipates in, his shyness remains formidable. And from the finest material inside the documentary -- Allen demeaning their very own work, his candor -- mostly comes with a undercoating of humor. That's natural, but you have to question simply how much deflection of real emotion and honesty is going on and the way much Allen is completely safeguarding the mission for private details and soul-baring. To Weide's credit, there is a flourish midway inside the documentary where he catches and edits together many people, including Allen, while using the term "compartmentalize" because it requires Allen's mental makeup. Even if you will discover flaws, Woodsy Allen remains fascinating, funny and informative. The film has several moments where stars -- these dying to make use of Allen after which it feeling a mix of confusion (about how precisely well they did) and recognition of the items he got from these with a minimalist's touch -- recall his style. Cusack and Wiest condition that Allen's training is easy: Do what feels natural, and obtain it completed in a hurry. They laugh, together with Allen, when adding this according to his fascination with getting where you can watch a Knicks game. STORY: Woodsy Allen Changes Title of Next Film "I don't have plenty of persistence around or possibly generally,Inch Allen states. "Essentially've become a few things i want, then If only to maneuver ahead, finish and return home.In . That hurry, as it were, has created an enormous report on movies, many of them great while others not -- the calculation from the existence's work that Allen seems in summary by 50 percent different responses: 1) he wanted he'd done better even round the great films and two) he's happy people emerge watching his focus on all, even if the film doesn't succeed. "Woodsy Allen has not felt obligated to top themselves," Feeney notes. "He's felt obligated to accomplish whatever interests him most likely probably the most.In . "I don't be worried about commercial success," Allen states, and laughs while adding, "as well as the finish result's I rarely get it done.In . Woodsy Allen finishes with reflection on Evening amount of time in Paris, his most financially effective film. And, fittingly enough, Weide values that Allen's existence and career continue being in forward motion: "The prolific character of Woodsy's output has provided an embarrassment of riches. Really, Woodsy might have made three features just inside the time it's taken me to produce that certain documentary." Woodsy Allen PBS

'Immortals' on track for $13 mil Friday

Relativity's 'Immortals' got off to a solid start Thursday night, grossing $1.4 million in midnight bows.Relativity's "Immortals" looks to be on track for a healthy debut this weekend, with B.O. observers expecting the pic to gross around $30 million in its opening frame. Including Thursday night's $1.4 million grosses, pic's shaping up to earn around $12.5 million to $13 million today. Though comparable midnight grosses for films like "The Expendables'' ($850,000) and "Battle: Los Angeles'' ($700,000) translated to debuts in the mid-$30 millions, "Immortals'' faces with a tougher B.O. marketplace, especially for the pic's under-25 target demo."Immortals'" total expected Friday take would put it in line with some of the more optimistic projections for Paramount's "Puss in Boots," which experts peg as high as $27 million for the weekend. Mid-twenties, however, seem like the average expectation -- and Friday's Veteran's Day holiday may help boost those earnings. Although Jane thinks he is able to charm his way off her radar, he'll soon learn otherwise. "She's wiser and fewer simple to mess up the trail," creator Bruno Heller informs us. "Once she will get the part between her teeth she's not going to stop until she reaches the reality. The complication is that they greatly like one another." Obviously, Hodgins doesn't wish to discuss his buddies as well as their baby. There's fun available there."I really like that Not so long ago is presenting Cinderella. What else could you tease? - LisaNATALIE: You will possibly not recognize Storybrooke's Cinderella, especially since she's a youthful pregnant lady named Ashley (Falling Skies' Jessy Schram). "She's trying to escape some bad choices, and Mr. Gold [Robert Carlyle] is associated with that because everybody constitutes a cope with him," Schram states. "Emma sees lots of herself in Ashley and she or he helps her and guides her Ashley develops some balls due to Emma visiting town."Would be the CSI: Miami authors considering giving Horatio an appreciation interest this year? - Ash, via TwitterADAM: Considering it? My characters going on a date, Maxs character makes fun of me for having a bit of a gut, and so I get insecure and I take off my clothes in front of my own mirror, Jake told Access Hollywood Lives Billy Bush and Kit Hoover of the set up for Tuesdays episode of the comedy, also involving Max Greenfield, who plays Schmidt. Zooey walks in and accidentally sees my peen, if you will, and it sets off a whole thing about seeing each other naked and living with female roommates. FOX put the show on hold for the World Series, just after it got a full season pick-up, but on the day they learned the news about their show going the distance, the cast was thrilled. Hammond: Oscar Hopefuls Swarm Hollywood Awards Gala

Across town as President Barack Obama was drawing every celebrity not in contention for awards this season, the 15th Annual Hollywood Awards Gala was taking place at the Beverly Hilton and all the Oscar hopefuls who agreed to show up to accept an award werethere in their Monday finest as this was a place to be seen if you want an ego boost at this early point in the season. With 19 above and below the line categories to plow through this was a surprisingly fun show that if it didn’t already exist, Hollywood would have to find someway to invent. Billed as the”official” kickoff to awards season ( if you don’t count all those film festivals we have just been through), The Hollywood Awards, created – and basically chosen – by Executive DirectorCarlos de Abreu (who with Janice Penningtonfounded the Gala and accompanying Film Festival) are the result ofa months-long negotiation between him and the studios and distributors who are using this early opportunity to get key positioning for the players they hope to advanceduring the long awards season leading ultimately to Oscar. The only caveat is that to get the award you have to agree to show up. This year de Abreuhas his pulse on some real contenders and handed out acting awards to, among many others, Michelle Williams, George Clooney and Christopher Plummer who all could realistically be consideredclose to front runners in their respective categories. A real highlight of the show was when Marilyn Monroe’s Oscar-nominated Bus Stop (1956) co-star Don Murray showed up to present Hollywood Actress of the Yearto Williams who plays the iconic star in The Weinstein Company’s My WeekWith Marilyn.”I’m the last of the the on-screen lovers of Marilyn Monroe and I stilljust happen to have a body that actually works, “the 82-year old actorsaid to much laughter. “Michelle re-created momentsI was so intimately familiarto me as I spent 14 months working withMarilyn. There’s not one thing in this film that’s not truthful. It was a revelation. Michelle’s performance made me appreciate Marilyn Monroe so much more.” Williams, noticeably nervous, said her friends always wanted to see her win a award so she couldbasically sweat through the experience. She did well thoughclosing with atouchingperception about Monroe. “It seems to me that all Marilyn Monroe wanted was to be taken seriously as an actress and she studied so hard and never really there,” shesaid adding that it wasironic Williams herself could get this kind of recognition that so eluded thestar she played. In his acceptance as Hollywood Actor of the year for The Descendants, Clooney kept inserting the word “lucky” into his speech. “I was lucky to land on a hospital show on Thursday nights at 10 on NBC that changed my career. I was lucky to workwith these people. I was lucky to get this part. I was lucky to work with Alexander Payne. And I am lucky to be here with all of you,” he said. Clooney also commented on how bad everyone looked on the giant projection screen behind the podium. I have said it before and I will say it again , these speeches are a really good wayfor the winners to practice giving theirspeeches for the Golden Globeswhich will be held in the same room just 2 1/2 months later. And if that’s the case perhaps the most effective speech would have to be the one 81 year old Christopher Plummer gave in accepting his Supporting Actor of the Yearhonor forBeginners near the top ofthe show.” It’s nice to get this early in the ceremony because it’s way past my bedtime. I want to thank the invisible committee for seriously risking their reputationsin givingme this plaque. I loved doing this film because I have never been this relaxed in front of a camera,” he said. Co-star Ewan McGregor presented it to him and got laughs saying he was nervous meetingPlummer because “I wondered if he liked my version of ‘the hills are alive with the sound of music’ in Moulin Rouge”. Supporting Actress honoree Carey Mulligan, shooting Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby in Australia flew in to accept her award for Shame from Christoph Waltz saying “I begged and begged (director) Steve McQueen for the part and even followed him into a taxi and pretended I was going to Soho.” Some of the most amusing moments of the night were watching the French honorees from The Artist trying to thank Harvey Weinstein (who wasin the audience)for making the film possible. Receiving his award from co-star Penelope Ann Miller Breakthough Director winner Michel Hazanavicius thanked ” Horvey Win Steen” while his leading actor and Spotlight Award winner Jean Dujardinasked ” Do I have to talk? It’s a silent movie. My english is rusty but I want to thank Harvey Whine Stin.” Glenn Close , who is hoping to nab her sixth Oscar nomination this year for Albert Nobbs, flew in for one night from the NY set of Damages to accept the Hollywood Career Achievement Award and said,”It’s humbling and kind of confusing. If anything it points up the fragility of it all,” as she went on to thank all her make up and hair people, the cinematographers, her parents, her first film director George Roy Hill and her husband David Shaw who she said figured out the secret to her success when he observed, “IKNOW what it is. It’s all about the hair.” Some of the best speeches of the night belonged to presenter Anne Hathaway who eschewed the teleprompter for her own cleverly written notes in presenting 50/50 star Joseph Gordon-Levitt with the Breakthrough Actor of the Year award, slyly pointing out he has actually been in the business 20 years, and a very bearded Ben Affleck whobegan hisCinematographer of the Year presentationto The Tree of Life’s Emmanuel Lubezki by saying how he had been mistaken for Jerry Bruckheimer when he drove up to the hotel. In presenting Young Adult writer Diablo Cody’s Screenwriter of the Year award , Quentin Tarantino got big laughs quoting NY Times critic A.O.Scott’s review of her not-so-successful Juno follow up, Jennifer’s Body. ” Scott wrote ‘Do you thinkDiablo Cody isa great writer? Wellonly if you think Quentin Tarantino is a great writer’. Well I do and I DO,” he said. The final award to the ensemble cast of The Help was another highlight. Co-star Viola Davis accepted for the large group with heartfelt remarks about the toll theawards season takes. “Something you lose in self-promotion and the Oscar push and publicists is that this is a collaborative art. There’s a sense of trust that in order to make the art form work you couldn’t do only yourself, ” she said with tears welling up. “Rather than arguing about billing, trailers, locations, you’re all in this together. This cast is 99% women and we all walked away loving each other.” Director of the Year Bennett Miller told me after getting his award from co-star Jonah Hill that he felt good about how Moneyball turned out, despite all its checkered history (original director Steven Soderbergh departed just days before production was to begin). To be standing up there with this award was a real triumph for Miller. With all this Hollywood glitz and glamour it seems odd no one has stepped up to televise the event, even with Starz as the main presenting sponsor . In fact Starz head honcho Chris Albrecht opened the evening and couldn’t help but notice the star-studded room. The only problem is that in order to get them to show up you have to give them an award. That’s really Hollywood.

I believe we are able to perform some really awesome stuff, shooting individuals cars which fashion which aesthetic with present day cameras and technology..."Soderbergh's Contagion has gone out now.

To ensure that his or her blithely nosy Southern belle from the neighbor, Jessica Lange steals this surreal freak show with comical verve, purring and hissing in the delirious display of mock piety laced with menacing vulgarity. She's sufficient induce to stay updated. Still, the mess of yank Horror Story is berserk with a fault, although it has an unnerving originality compelling us to check out ultimately cringe, or even smirk.Enter in the own risk.NIGHT'S TOP PICK: Inside the tradition of Martin Scorsese's acclaimed biographical portrait of Bob Dylan, No Direction Home, Cinemax presents Scorsese's two-evening tribute for the so-referred to as "quiet Beatle" inside the completely observed George Harrison: Dwelling within the fabric World (9/8c concludes Thursday). 'Dead Island' Movie, Inspired By Gaming Trailer, Lands At Lionsgate

"Dead Island," the Techland and Deep Silver survival horror gaming that hit consoles captured, isn't completed using its global infection campaign. The gaming world, it seems, is not big enough to contain this zombie apocalypse: now, "Dead Island" is positioned to consume the silver screen too. Lionsgate has optioned the "Dead Island" movie rights from Deep Silver. But with the appear of things, it seems the main inspiration for your "Dead Island" film won't be the sport itself, nevertheless the preliminary "Dead Island" trailer that went viral taken. "Like the hundreds of journalists and countless fans who've been so passionate and vocal in regards to the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck," mentioned Lionsgate's Joe Drake in the news release, which notes that "a clip assists as [the movie's] primary creative inspiration." A clip is seen here just just in case you will need a refresher. The story in the gaming itself, clearly, has little to nothing associated with the "Dead Island" trailer's plot, which tales the best handful of moments from the son's existence in rewind. The idea of telling a "Dead Island" film from finish to start is kind of awesome type of the "Indication" of zombie movies, as it were but can it be a misstep to recapture that trailer's lightning? Can it be even possible to recapture that lightning? Seems in my opinion the film might be better offered feasting round the meat in the actual game, however, I have not carried out it really yet. For those who have carried out the sport already, any idea what: might be a clip enough to sustain an entire-fledged "Dead Island" movie, or should producers keep an eye on at the sport itself for inspiration? In the event you aren't familiar with the foundation material, take a look at 20 minutes of "Dead Island" action footage because of MTV Multiplayer: [via Entertainment Weekly]

Letter from Toronto: Friends with Kids Falters in the End, But Does Right By Adam Scott

Jennifer Westfeldt’s sort-of romantic comedy Friends with Kids is on to something, even if in the end it suffers from a failure of nerve. This is actor and screenwriter Westfeldt’s directorial debut (she co-wrote and starred in the 2001 feature Kissing Jessica Stein), and it’s polished to the point of shallow glossiness — it could benefit from being a little rougher, a little messier. But the picture at least attempts to wrestle with the notion that there’s no single right way to raise a family or navigate a partnership. And it acknowledges, if only fleetingly, the way very well-meaning people who are parents can often be incredibly smug toward those who aren’t, insinuating that their own lives are somehow more meaningful because they have kids who run them ragged. At one point Westfeldt and Adam Scott, who play best friends Julie and Jason, ponder how much their friends changed after they had kids. “I don’t know these people anymore,” Jason says, bewildered after he’s just attended a dinner party where frazzled, distracted parents did nothing but snap at one another and at their children, completely unable to enjoy themselves or one another. “These people are mean and angry.” The tide shifts when Jason and Julie decide to have a child together without becoming romantically involved. They’ve been close friends for years, and they live in the same apartment building — why not? The experiment goes surprisingly well, and the two end up with a pretty good kid who really does seem to be enriching their lives. In one of the movie’s most gratifying sequences, their traditionally coupled friends, played by a Bridesmaids reunion cast including Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd, Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm (Westfeldt’s partner in real life), speculate about how out-of-control the new parents’ lives must be, only to find that Jason and Julie’s unorthodox arrangement is extremely efficient and agreeable. But Friends with Kids ends up turning on itself, becoming a more conventional comedy than it sets out to be. In the end, Jason and Julie do end up fitting themselves into a mold, although at least the transition doesn’t come easy. Westfeldt’s Julie is too adorable by half: She’s a cutie-pie neurotic, and the appeal wears thin quickly. But as writer and director, Westfeldt has at least done right by Adam Scott, a fine comic actor who, until now, has been relegated to second-banana roles. A highly unscientific poll conducted here and there among my women friends, straight and gay, has revealed that all women love Adam Scott. I have not been able to determine the source of his charm, but it appears that in addition to being good-looking (but not too good-looking), he tends to come off as the kind of guy who has flaws you could live with: He’s a little smart-alecky but also smart and funny; he might leave his underwear on the floor, but he remembers to hang up his towel; and so forth. As I said, it’s all unscientific. Friends with Kids proves that Scott can carry a movie: His comic timing is crisp and on-point, but he’s also capable of playing it straight when he needs to. He’s marvelous in one revelatory scene where he enumerates Julie’s best qualities, and as written, it’s the sort of dialogue that could head right into pukefest territory, fast. Scott gives Friends with Kids some necessary edge, and though the picture overall could still be much sharper, from scene to scene, he’s key to its integrity. No wonder his Jason is superdad material.
